Amazon.com Review
"'Gram?' Cammy leaned closer. Gram Tut's eyes were still closed. 'You're not dead yet, are you?' There was a long moment in which Cammy held her breath. But then, Tut gave a grin; said weakly, 'Fooled ya!' and shot her eyes wide open." Eleven-year-old Cammy and her Gram Tut have a special thing going. In fact, things are pretty good with her beautiful mother, Maylene, and her 16-year-old brother, Andrew, too. But dealing with her cousin Patty Ann is a whole different story. She is pretty--no, gorgeous--smart, spoiled, and she called Gram Tut "about dead." How could Cammy be expected to like her? She wishes Patty Ann would disappear off the face of the earth. What if you wished something like that and it came true? It happens to Cammy, and it changes everything. As she speculates even before the tragedy, "...a day that was all blue sky could turn over dark and dangerous while she was playing a game with the other campers, or just sitting on a bench. It could happen that fast. Change." Fast-paced, immediate, and true, Cousins is a powerful, dramatic read. Winner of the Newbery Medal for M.C. Higgins, the Great, Virginia Hamilton masterfully brings the agonizing emotions of adolescence to life like few can. (Ages 9 to 12) --Karin Snelson

I think this book was great, it was sad that Patty Ann drowned trying to save another cousin, this is why we must love each other while we are alive, Cammy thought that Patty Ann was miss perfect, she played the piano, she was good at school, Larry liked her hair: Cammy was just about ready to invite Elodie home after day camp when Elodie nodded toward Patty Ann and Larry. Cammy looked. Larry had his arm across the back of the seat. He was playing with Patty Ann's long, pretty braid, then he twisted and untwisted gently around his hand. Larry was turned toward her, looking down at her face. Patty Ann leaned toward him. Just a little, Elodie and Cammy could see she was grinning, her face from what they could see of it looked dreamy. So everyone like Patty Ann hair, but Cammy didn't. So I think this is a great book, everyone should read it! And it teaches a good lesson.

This book was good it was sad that the cousin that tried so hard to be accepted was lost forever in the end. I feel this book has a lot to say to young readers in terms of relationships. People are not always going to be around forever so it is best to love them where they are at.

Best for younger readers...

I had to read this book for a college class (Literature for Adolecents) and was less than thrilled by it. I think it is certainly on a very low reading level, while at the same time using stream-of-consiousness techniques that could be confusing for some younger readers. The plot is very predictable and the characters are not very engaging. However, younger readers would probably not see the predictablness in the plot as much (they haven't had as much experience with plots as older readers and so don't know the patterns as well). Also, maybe a younger reader could relate to the story and the characters better. It is written from the point of view of a young girl and the scentence structure and language, as well as the mentality, show it. I don't know. I never read it when I was younger so I can't say that a younger reader would enjoy it, but they would very likely enjoy it more than an adult......

This story was one of the best stories I have every read. Even though the story is fiction it seems very realistic. The story was sad at points but I loved the book!

I am very sorry to say, that when I got to page 17, I was very bored with the book. It took me forever to read it because my mind kept wondering. I just put it down and started another book. AI couldn't read it any more
